Vineyard
Our Gapstone Vineyard is a crown jewel amongst Sonoma County's vineyards. Located in the Northeastern slopes of the Petaluma Gap appellation, its terroir and character are defined by well drained, silty gravel on a gentle 2% slope, an elevation of 285ft. and visited by the trademark cool ocean breeze and coastal fog. Six clones of Pinot Noir were carefully matched to their location and soil types in the Gapstone Vineyard.
Winemaker's Tasting Notes
Our 2023 Blue Rock Pinot Noir is a blend of Calera, Mt. Eden and 115. The vintage of 2023 was memorable for its brevity. All grapes were harvested before the end of September. Even in the cool, windy Petaluma Gap, the harvest began in earnest the first week of September.
We sorted and destemmed the hand-picked clusters and all fermenters were cold soaked for 3 days to capture maximum aromatic potential as well as color. Upon draining and pressing at dryness, the Blue Rock Pinot Noir lots underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel and were lees stirred once a month to encourage textural elements.
Food Affinities
Aromas of mixed berry compote, baking spices and dried cranberry are intertwined with lifted, floral nuances. The palate displays red fruit, sweet and savory notes and the trademark racy acidity of the Petaluma Gap. The finish has tremendous depth with elements of bittersweet cocoa, toasted caramel and spice.
Ageability
Elegance and the seamless texture will compliment the bright youthful fruit when enjoyed soon, but earthy, savory and ripe fruit elements will evolve with ageing for up to 10 years.
